HGTV’s Paul James, “The Gardener Guy”

by Susan Harris on August 21, 2005

Pauljames I hope you all get basic cable because the Home and Garden Television Channel (HGTV) is not only where I get most of my gardening ideas but it’s how I survive the loooong winter (even in relatively balmy Zone 7 it’s too damn long for me).  So let me introduce the folksiest, goofiest, most knowledgeable gardening guy you’ll ever see on TV - the host of "Gardening by the Yard," Paul James. Ain’t he cute? Plays the guitar, too. Probably had a ponytail and played in a rock band. Overall, my kind of guy, but I digress.

Now be forewarned that Paul may take some getting used to. He and his crew are pretty goofy - no, make that silly in the extreme - but that’s just him not taking himself too seriously. What you get with the silliness is knowledge of gardening techniques that are almost always organic and that work with the land and elements, not against them. He encourages people to just accept a little insect damage, to not plant or transplant in the middle of the summer, and loads of other seriously practical lessons for gardening. He turned me on to conifers. He turned me on to one of my favorite gardening writers, Ann Lovejoy of Bainbridge Island, Washington. And he just keeps turning me on to gardening.

Where I live his show is on Saturday and Sunday mornings, as part of a line-up of solid gardening shows from 10 to 1. Of course I’m not going to spend my weekend mornings in front of the TV watching gardening, so I tape shows for my viewing enjoyment throughout the week, usually while I’m exercising. And because I don’t like programming the timer any more than you do, I just pop in a tape sometime before 10 and press "record," which even my most electronically challenged friends (you know who you are) can do, I think.

From my original site, Zoey said she likes paul, too, but that he drives her husband crazy with his silliness. He does know his horticulture, though.

I am trying to get some information to Paul James about a friend of mine who has the most inavative way of composting. I truely think that it is something that Paul would be interested in, how can I reach him. The web site is wwwcompost-bin.com.

It is really a must see composting idea. It is great for small spaces, or people who don’t want to have so much room taken up with there composting, and is SO very easy to do.

If anyone can tell me how to comtact him or his show I would appreciate it. I know it is worth it.

Thanks,

On you last show you mentioned a non-toxic topical gopher/mole repelant. What is the name of the product? Where can I buy it?

carole mason 06.20.06 at 12:26 am

I’m looking for the name of the non-toxic gopher/mole repellant you mentioned on your show a week or two ago. What is the exact product name? Where can I find it?
Thanks!!

carole mason 06.20.06 at 12:29 am

The non-toxic gopher-mole repellant that can be broadcast over lawn, gardens, etc. was discussed on Paul James, the Gardener Guy show during the first week or two of June, 06. Please let me know where I can obtain, and what the name of the product is. Thanks!

Heather 06.21.06 at 9:15 am

Wow, they really do ask you to talk to Paul….

So, would you let Paul know that he looks way cuter with the goatee? THX! ;)

Laura Blair 06.22.06 at 12:17 pm

Hi Mr. James,
I did not write down the info on the nasty pests “mosquito”. You told viewers about how to rid them and be safe for your yard and pets. I have 2 dogs that love their backyard, but I don’t want them hurt or bothered by getting eating alive. Nor do I, for that matter. Can you help me please? signed….desperate in Seattle.

I have been taping Paul James’ Gardening by the Yard for the past 5 years and just LOVE seeing his beautiful bear feet!! Paul must have a foot fetish because he is always doing really closeup shots of his toes wiggling and soles all curled. He has really sexy feet and hope he continues to show them off.

I work in Gaithersburg, MD. for the Maryland-National Capital Park & Planning Commission (a.k.a. M-NCPPC). I am in the process of organizing an open house for our nursery and was trying to locate contact information for Paul James when I hyperlinked here… Now I have two questions: How would I get in contact with Mr.James, and while I am at it, would anyone have any interesting lecture or seminar topics that might interest “Park People”? Thanks much in advance!

Hello - I have a non toxic creation in mind that I think might be effective in keeping cats out of flower gardens. Any suggestions as to who I might contact to help me make this idea a reality?? Sincerely, Loma K.

In Episode #GBY-1304, Paul James (The Gardner Guy) talked about the item below. I’ve searched high and low but can neither find out where to purchase this “gizmo” or how to contact Paul or HGTV to ask them. Can you help?

[This great gizmo allows you to hang potted plants just about anywhere (figure E). All you do is install the hanger using the screws provided--in this case, on a fence--and slide a six- to 10-inch terra-cotta pot into the latch at the top (figure F).
"With a little imagination, you may find even more uses for these things," James says, "like keeping hand tools handy--or for storing grilling tools next to the barbecue."]

I cut and pasted this from HGTV’s website, but was unable to paste the picture to tbis e-mail.

My husband & I learn a lot from your shows. I am trying to locate the weed pullers, twister and the grabber that you were showing. It was good because you didn’t have to stoop over. Where can I find them.

I just wanted to say how much I enjoy the show and all of my family like his personality, keep it real Paul.

Rock-N-Rob 08.19.06 at 12:53 pm

My wife and I are huge fans of The Gardener Guy!
Paul brought a whole new level of fun to even the most mundane chore!

Paul has inspired us to change the course of our lives. Our yard is the talk of the neighborhood. And I would love for him to see my studio and work.

What can you tell me about Bountea products up in Palmer, Alaska. Do their products work?

I think you did a video on John and Mary Evens, the couple who make these products, several years ago.

Thanks, Joerizz

Lori D 09.04.06 at 7:31 pm

I also am looking for the granulated castor oil Paul James mentioned on one of his shows to deter moles & golphers from your yard. Nobody around where I live carries it. Where can you purchase or order this?

Lisa 09.06.06 at 9:58 am

I too, am looking for the name of the non-toxic gopher/mole repellant you mentioned on your show a week or two ago. What is the exact product name? Where can I find it? Thanks!!

BONNIE JEAN GORGIEVSKI 10.05.06 at 2:07 pm

I have an umbrella tree can you tell me how to get leaves on the bottom of the tree had been pulled off before. what is the care for this. how do i keep my cat out from using as a litter box. my main concern is growing leaves on the bare bottom part of tree. thanks.

Connie 10.23.06 at 10:13 am

HGTV has decided to mess with the time schedule for Gardening by the Yard programming. Has Paul stopped filming new episodes of this show?? There are so few good gardening shows left on the air it would be a shame if he threw in the towel, or if HGTV abandons it.

lynne 11.11.06 at 3:47 pm

I, too am very upset with hgtv or comcast for changing “the gardener guy’s ” scedule!!! tell me who to contact…what is paul james’ e mail thanks

Susan Woodthorpe 11.15.06 at 2:09 pm

I am very upset. I have been watching Paul James show for years at 10:30 Saturday and Sunday mornings. Where has it gone? I live in Madison, Mississippi…..

Deb Sanders 11.15.06 at 10:57 pm

Paul James show was on at the perfect time before it disapeared. What were you thinking? I count on Paul for up to date info where other shows are just repetitive. Please come back on Sat and Sun like before. You are missed in Ohio.

A. Smith 11.18.06 at 12:26 am

I’m glad to know I am not the only one who is upset about the disappearance of the Gardener Guy. Do I complain to HGTV or to Dish Network? By the way, how can they call it HGTV (doesn’t the G stand for garden?) What garden shows are there now? They only want shows that sell stuff — not that teach and entertain. First they reduced the time from twice on Sat and Sunday, then to once Sat and Sunday, then to just once Sat. It was the only show I looked forward to besides MONK!

W.Sparacino 11.18.06 at 6:51 pm

I agree with everyone’s comments on this website. We loved watching his show on the weekends too!!! There are now hardly any shows regarding gardening and landscaping on HGTV. Maybe they need to change it to HTV instead of HGTV. His show was very entertaining and informational too!! Let me know if there is another place to email or call regarding The Gardner Guy’s show. I would like Paul James’ email or website address too, I have a question about Purple Dome Asters. Thanks from Wisconsin….

Carol 11.24.06 at 10:13 am

Why did they move Paul James so early on Sunday morning? HGTV no longer show PPP, Rebecca’s Garden, Gardner’s Journal, Urban Outsider, and many other gardening shows. I don’t care if they are repeats or out of season.
It looks as if they are bringing in NEW shows of the same stuff. Remodeling, rebuilding, etc.. Yeap! You guys are right. It is HTV now. Not HGTV!

I e-mailed them my concerns at the link below. If you want your voice heard you may want to also.

what happened to Paul James? Who came up with the new shows.?Must be under 30!

Rene' 12.31.06 at 2:00 am

I can’t get enough of Paul James, the Gardner Guy. I wish his show would come on everyday. I’ve tried Gardening magazines which in most cases, I cannot relate to. Whereas, all of Paul James’ shows are real and have relevant information. My wish though is to get the building plans for his garden shed. I just love that shed and can see it in my backyard.

Olivia Caris 01.01.07 at 12:55 pm

During the Rose Parade, Paul James mentioned a type of disease resistant rose. I thought he said “Shout-Out Roses”. I can’t find anything online with that name.
Can someone send me the name of the rose?
Also, if they are available anywhere for purchase?

Olivia
PS- Congratulations on 28 years of marriage to the James’s!

Gloria Jacobs 01.21.07 at 2:47 pm

The roses are “Knock out roses”. You can get single (looks like old fashioned roses) or double petals. They are becoming
more popular each year. Most nurseries have them, you can even find them at K-mart
and Lowes when they get their other nursery stock in.

Mr. Paul James
Master Gardener

Hello Mr. James,

I view and enjoy your show just about every Saturday morning. I like your show’s format. I find it is interesting and helpful.

Have you written and published any gardening books? I searched the HGTV site using your name and “Gardening By The Yard” found nothing. My Goolge search brought me to this web site. Please advise me or post a list of your book titles and publisher on your web site. I may very well add them to my reference library.

Best regards,

T.N.T.
forge_1@hotmail.com

PS: Should any visitors of this site know of books or texts authored by Paul James please email me.

Phyllis Croson 02.24.07 at 1:27 pm

Today’s show was regarding a shrub, shade loving, which Paul called sweet spire. I cannot find any reference to this name in my gardening books. Please help. Sounds like what I need for my shaded, under high trees garden problem. Thanks in advance.

I heard that newspaper can be used to line vegetable gardens to keep out weeds, is this true and is it safe?

Thanx

Kathy Altrui 03.18.07 at 1:33 pm

When I was home sometime last summer due to surgery, I watched a Paul James show and he had a plant that I once had and killed by cutting it back, I was kinda guessing what to do since I bought it with no instructions. It really was a flowering bush and it got to be about 2 to 2 /2 feet tall and it had little green leaves and the flowers were purple and red, if I remember right they were purple towards the stem and red on the tips. I have looked at all kinds of flowers online and can’t find it. Anyway, Paul James had on one of his episodes, he stood right next to it and said something about it. It was so fast I didn’t catch the name if he said it and I don’t remember what episode it was it would have probably been between May 31 and July 15. I would appreciate it if I could find out the name of the plant, it bloomed from late spring into the fall. I am so sad I can’t find it. I even went back to where I purchased it and they don’t have a clue, of course it wasn’t a nursery. Any Ideas???

Joan Mapes 03.20.07 at 7:33 pm

Just wondering which companies Paul James would recommend for “mail-order” garden flowers and plants. (not looking for seeds, but “starter” plants.) Currently, I order now and then from Spring Hill Nursery… but looking to try other companies as well!
Thanks!

Joan

Hello MR. Paul James,
I really enjoy watching your show, I think you are a great person with tons of knowledge. Thank you for sharing. This past week you had a chainsaw with a guard/cover on it. You used it like pruners, you picked up a piece of lumber, compress the handles on the saw a cut the lumber in half. I would like to know the brand name and where I might be able to purchase one.

Jessi 03.27.07 at 12:43 pm

well I don’t suppose there is any way to contact Mr. James. I really wanted to know where to get the edging rocks with the mow-strip he talked about recently. And I found a song I think he’d just love! It’s called Brown Gold by Tom Chapin :) How does he get the Q’s for his Q&A if you can’t write to him? A DVR helps catch all the Gardening by the Yards for you guys too!

Jessi 03.27.07 at 12:48 pm

oh yeah - Joan, I believe the saw you saw :) is by black and decker - they’re called alligator loppers - I want one too!

Lou Highsmith 03.28.07 at 7:37 pm

HOW DO YOU TREAT WOOD TO GET RID OF CARPENTER BEES ?

Linda Strange` 04.01.07 at 4:40 pm

I would like to know where I can purchase the “Auger” tool you were demonstrating in one of your “gadget” show recently. I really would like to have this tool that attaches to your power drill. Planting look so easy with this. Especially for planting tulips and other types of bulbs. I live in Fort Worth, Tx., and would like to know the nearest store or if you haveing a mailing address to a supplier how has this product. Thanks, Your show is on our “season pass” favorites on Direct TV.

Sue P. Grissom 04.26.07 at 6:22 pm

Paul, your show is wonderful. I enjoy it so much. HELP ME!!!!!

I live in the beautiful mountains of the southwestern part of Virginia, alt. 2500 ft. My lawn is 90% shadded by huge oak trees therefore it is extremly difficult to get anything to grow, however it seemed I was going to be successful in getting about 8 accubas to live (at least they have for the past three years). Enter…the unusual and devastating 5 day freeze of April 2007. NOW, all of my accubas appear to be dead. Are they? Will they come back? Should I pull them up? Should I cut them off and wait for new growth? Please don’t tell me to leave them “as is”. They are, at this point, a terrible eyesore.

To complain a bit more…I had 40 5 gallon rhoddies and accubas planted. 25 of them died. I planted 25 more and all but 8 died. Now they are dead. I have truly struggled with this yard for 20 years. I’m about ready for plastic flowers.

Any anwer on what to do with the poor accubas?

A fan,

Sue Grissom

Paul,
On a recent show you Recommended a Viburnum, Summer Snowflake. You said it produced berries that attract birds so I was very interested. However when I went to the nursery to purchase it I was told that it did not produce berries. Which is right?

Elke 05.27.07 at 8:37 am

Why does HGTV want to drive us nuts with that irritating background music (noise) on your show? Would you please ask them to turn it offfffffff?

It seems that other than a few sparce leaves here and there the whole plant is bare. What do I do? How do I prune them? Can I cut them all the way back? Please help. I just don’t know what to do!!! Wayne Broyles 06.01.07 at 6:04 pm

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a neighbor that dispite my request for him to contact someone that knows more about Trees than we do, cut down 2 60+ feet poplar trees. I was told that the stump needed to be poisoned within 24 hours or we would have new trees growing. And it seems as though this information was true for in my back yard which has a 4000 gallon Koi pond and landscaping I am finding poplar trees popup everywhere from roots leading back to my neigbor’s yard.
What if anything can I do to stop this attack before a root finds its way through my liner and into my pond?
Thanks
Wayne in Sacramento, California

Mr. James,
It was a pleasure meeting you this afternoon while you were in transit at the DFW airport. We are volunteer Ambassadors who provide help to DFW passengers during their passage through the airport. My wife and I work the Friday afternoon shift at DFW, and we hope to see you again one of these days.
Though I did not mention it at the time, we are very jealous of your garden. We drive through Oklahoma now and then, and I’ve often wondered how you have managed to develop your garden in such climatic conditions. Your show has inspired us to actually think we will have success at a garden even in the DFW area.
Keep up the good work, and hope the HGTV folks will expand the coverage of your program in the future.

HELP!!!!! I am looking for a small Gardena (mfgr.) hand held rake for raking leaves, weeds an grass cutting in beds. I have one but have been unable to find additional ones. I would like to purchase two of them. I have been on line to Canada (can’t ship to US), i have spoken directly to many supposed outlets but have been unable to purchase.

Since I saw you on line using one, I thought perhaps that would be my best avenue. These are the most useful tool I have ever bought in my 60 someyears of gardening. If you can help me please e-mail.

Many thanks and I thoroughy enjoy your show!!!

Dear Paul,
I have recently discovered wild strawberries growing in my back yard. I did not plant them, they just majically appeared and are loaded with ripe strawberries. The chipmunks & squirrels have not bothered them. Are they good to eat? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Jason Kilgore 06.18.07 at 2:54 pm

Paul,

Love your show! I was wondering if you have an published books or are working on any? I would love to read more of your garden knowledge. Any info would be great. Thanks!

Freda Larson 06.19.07 at 8:24 pm

Paul, I find the show very informative and funny at the same time. Your latest episode showed how to stay fit by using tools used around the yard. My husband and I found these tips useful. I made a commit to my husband how large your calve muscles were and he replied they must be calve implants. I disagreed and said you must be a mountain biker.

jay 06.27.07 at 6:03 pm

I am happy to say that Paul James is still showing off his big beautiful feet on Gardening By the Yard. That is the only reason I watch it and record it. He has the sexiest soles and toes on television. I especially love when he does closeup shots of his toes wiggling and soles all wrinkled. Keep up the great work Paul, you foot fans love you!!

Audrey DeMoura 07.13.07 at 8:24 pm

I have my lawn serviced by a Scotts Lawn Service. My problem is Dallisgrass. It has suddenly appeared and is taking over in big solid patches. I was told there was nothing that could be done without destroying the lawn. I feel that I am throwing good money away. Should I continue the plan or just forget it.

connie rensema 07.26.07 at 1:38 pm

help me, help me (use your little spider voice) i have locust trees. i’ve cut down 15-20 of them in my yard and now i have a multitude of babies all over my yard. how do i get rid of them. i’ve tried bleach, vinager, boiling water and my trusty hatchet. i’m afraid to use a broad leafe herbaside, don’t want to kill everything. what can i do?

Connie 07.30.07 at 9:53 am

I saw one of your showes a while back on mending a deep injury to a tree. The suburbs of Chicago recently had a “mirco burst” and I lost a rather large limb on a 20 year old Maple. The damage to the trunk is about 1/4 of the diamiter and about 3 feet from the ground. The damage is also about 2 feet long. Is this tree worth trying to save at this point? and if so…I need the repair info again. Can’t find it on HGTV.

Jeremy DaCosta 08.09.07 at 3:12 pm

I have a Japanese weeping maple tree that was obviously grafted. I have a picture of it. I would like to email this picture to you. This year it sprouted a shoot below the graft and it has the leaves of the maple that the Japanese maple was grafted to. It is weird but I have to know the following. Do I need to trim the new shoot of the original maple? Will it allow the Japanese weeping maple to continue to grow or will it hog all of the nutrients?

jay 09.04.07 at 10:28 pm

In addition to Gardening by the yard, I am taping Paul James on Home Grown Cooking on DIY channel. Every Sunday morning at 5:30am he is on. Guess what…..he is also showing off his feet on this show! Even though it is a cooking show he did a segment on “Sore Feet” and showed an EXTREME closeup of his toes wiggling and soles all wrinkled. It is soooo obvious he loves to show off his beautiful feet on camera.

Smartalec 09.15.07 at 11:27 pm

Paul, I had Tivo’d an episode where you had mentioned the name of one of your favorite trees that does well in sandy soil, sun and you said you had it planted in your yard…I thought you called it a chinese french tree but that must not be right as I can’t locate anything with that name. Of course my Tivo locked up and I can’t retrieve the show. If you know what I’m talking about, please post the name. We’re landscaping our backyard and it’s pure sand with a lot of sun and wind and that tree sounded perfect! :)

Lisa 09.17.07 at 10:12 pm

Hello,
I am looking to contact Paul James the gardening guy about his suggestion to use cocoa mulch. I have luckily found out before putting 5 bags of the stuff on my lawn, that this mulch is deadly to dogs if ingested. I truly think this is vital information for all dog and cat owners. If you or anyone knows how to relay this information to Paul as well as others please contact me. Thank you and happy gardening.

I saved your show with the gardener that has the black garden plants. She has found over 100 plants. Can you provide a list of those plants or provide a website or email for this gardener in Britain that found these lovely plants please?

Thank you! Love your shows!

Dear Mr. James

I watch your show every weekend and have learned a lot. But I have a question.

I have 3 climbing rose bushes that are 3 years old. They are climbing beautfully but the do not get any roses on the vines. They are planted with a southern exposer. I have tried feeding many different foods that are suppose to make them bloom, but they are not, all they do is make them climb more. What else can I do. I live in Omaha, Ne. Do I need to do something in the winter to ensure blooms in the summer? HELP PLEASE.

Thank you
Joanne

Does anyone know WHY Paul James is no longer showing off his bare feet on Gardening By the Yard? For many years now he shows off his soles on camera and will wiggle and flex his toes, much to the delight of his many fans. Unfortunately the last several shows he is wearing shoes now and is now ‘foot conscious’ about showing off his beautiful feet. What a shame. Paul, I in future episodes you start to show off your feet again. Thanks

I really enjoy the show and always look forward to hearing about his dog Maggie. I can’t tell you how sad I was to hear that she has gone to the rainbow bridge. Is there a way that I could pass on a personal note to Paul. Expressing my sorrow?

Annette Preston 12.20.07 at 1:54 pm

Hello Paul.
I watch your shows Sat& sundays. When I can`t ,I tape and watch late nights. I need help. I garden In New Jersey and Las Vegas I live in both places. I need a Zoning Chart and can`t one. How can I get one?

Melany Andree 01.10.08 at 1:03 pm

I started a pet website and am interested on posting information on harmful plants and flowers to our pets. I have heard Paul talk about dangerous plants in the past. The site is http://www.mylooneypets.com. We send our deepest sympathy on the passing of Maggie.

Rachel 03.09.08 at 3:33 pm

Since Paul James, Gardening By the Yard, my fav gardening host doesn’t have any means to offer encouragement and HGTV seems to fall short there as well–I’ll put it here … recent changes in HGTV’s line up mean that I’ve lost my mid-morning weekend connection. As the daughter of two master gardeners, I still have lots to learn and his campy style is easy to watch. HGTV, keep this guy in your forefront or risk me using the DVR to see him and ff past the folks that pay the bills.

Hello Paul.
I watch your show when I can . I was hopeing that you might be able to tell me what type of tree or shrub I can use to screen me from my neighbors. The soil is kinda clayish and at times wet. I would like some kind of low maintance and something that only grows to about 12feet? , and hugs the ground too. I seem to live in zone 5b from what the zone chart says. Also some of the areas are partly in shade from the many trees on lot. Again love your show!

I want to know where Paul gets all of his wonderful mulch. I live in Southern California and would like suggestions for finding a good mulch.

I had just turned on the show and caught just the last couple of minutes but could not catch the name of the product Paul was talking about that he said would get rid of moles for up to one year. The show was on HGTV on Sunday morning August 24th, 2008. Please help me out because we have tried everything.

Dear Paul, I watch your show but it would appear you only take on ” nice”common gardening problems. I am living in hell with all the Texas stickers. It is horrible problem. They are everywhere! Imagine taking a shower and when drying off your bath towel is full of stickers, my dog is suffering and won’t go outside because of all the stickers.
I have tried EVERYTHING to no avail. Please, please help me.
