My world turned on its side

by Susan Harris on August 18, 2006

This is how my computer screen displays everything right now, since I heard an unfamiliar beep and looked up at the screen to find everything ROTATED.  And when I called my regular IT problem-fixer he said the tRotationwo things I dreaded hearing the most - "Boy, never heard of that before!" with a little chuckle, and "I’m leaving for a long vacation tomorrow morning."  He did suggest another IT person and offered that it might be my video card.  Googling the phenonemon turned up a nifty virus you can buy - an "April Fool’s Joke" - that will cause your friends’ computer screens to rotate, too.  I’m sure  your friends will think it’s just as funny as I do.  The fixes they recommended didn’t work, so I doubt that a virus is responsible in my case.

Anyhoo, not much blogging for me until this damn thing is fixed.  I just hope my physical therapist isn’t on vacation because my neck’s killing me already.

Meanwhile, over on Garden Rant I managed to published an already-written piece about sustainable gardening, so check it out and tell me what you think.

What about turning the monitor on its side? At least until this is fixed - can’t hurt it too much. Maybe find a neighbor to borrow their extra monitor - there are usually many floating around as people upgrade to bigger/better quality displays. As long as it is not a hard-drive problem I think you are A-OK.

I’d be curious about the little buttons I think I see across the bottom edge of the monitor. Usually those adjust the video from side to side and top to bottom. We used to have an old monitor on which those little buttons would, if pressed accidentally (say if you pushed on the monitor to adjust the screen angle), get stuck partway inside the monitor case itself and all kinds of weird things would happen to the video display.

It’s no high-tech solution, but it might be worth a look.

Try CTRL + ALT + Up Arrow (hitting all three keys at the same time). Might work!

And I thought I had computer problems! I guess you will be living sideways until this is resolved. I hope the problem ends swiftly for you.

I once hit the three key combo by mistake and spent an uncomfortable half hour trying to google for the fix!

The CTRL+ALT+up arrow worked on my computer but you might also try right clicking on your desktop, graphics properties then on display settings.
